Dalam budaya Betawi bahasa keseharian maka tak heran istilah-istilah penamaan apapun berasal dari bahasa umum dipakai sehari-hari,hal ini tercermin dari karakter orang Betawi yg spontan dan sederhana. Begitu pun penyebutan kue Dongkal (dongkel/congkel) yang artinya tak lebih mengeluarkan dengan cara mendongkal setelah kue ini masak dalam kukusan/cetakan.
Kue dongkal sendiri memang punya pengaruh dari Jawa yang dalam istilah Jawa ialah “Awuq” Lazimnya kue berbahan sederhana ini dlm tradisi Betawi biasanya ada dalam tradisi Betawi Ora (Kampung) daerah pinggiran Jakarta, khususnya daerah tempatnya si Pitung mangkal, yaitu Rawa Belong, Sukabumi Utara dan sekitarnya, Bekasi dan lainnya..
Kue ini biasanya dapat ditemui dalam acara2 hajatan dlm budaya Betawi semisal khitanan atau syukuran pembangunan rumah hingga lebaran.
kue dongkel ini makanan khas orang betawi yang sudah jarang di temui di ibukota jakarta,sekalipun ada bertepatan dengan lebaran betawi ataupun festival kuliner khas betawi.
